Creating the perfect Christmas cheeseboard

There is no better time to indulge in cheese than over the Christmas period. We’ve picked out some popular and delicious choices of cheese to make the perfect Christmas cheeseboard.

We know just how much people love to indulge in cheese. However, we believe there is no better time to enjoy the finest cheeses than over the Christmas period.

Our customers deserve the very best when it comes to all foods. From the finest cuts of meat in our butchery, to the freshest groceries in our farm shop. When it comes to cheese, we have an excellent selection to choose from.

While our selection is vast, we'd love to introduce you specifically to Neal's Yard Dairy. We firmly believe that their farmhouse cheeses are simply nothing short of the best. That's why we think their choices of cheese would make an excellent selection for your Christmas cheeseboard.

Neal's Yard Dairy Cheese

Neal’s Yard Dairy help us select the very best British and Irish Cheeses, from the classic cheddars of Montgomery to Westcombe; and the British Territorials of Kirkham’s Lancashire to Sparkenhoe Red Leicester; or the soft cheese of Baron Bigod, to Tunworth.

They currently work with approximately 40 cheesemakers from Britain and Ireland to source the absolute finest cheeses, each with a commitment to a slow, hands-on approach to cheesemaking.

We are very pleased to offer a large range of cheese from Neal’s Yard Dairy to our customers. So let's take a look at a selection of their produce to create the perfect cheeseboard.

What cheese should I have in my cheeseboard?

Can you say you really enjoyed your Christmas if you didn’t indulge in a cheeseboard?

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your spread, we’ve picked out some popular and delicious choices of cheese for your Christmas cheeseboard.

Brie

The perfect choice for a cheese board centrepiece. Silky at its rind but crumbly at its core, Baron Bigod Suffolk-born, traditional Brie-style cheese balances a clean lactic brightness with mushroomy, vegetal notes.

Cheddar

Rich, brothy, savoury flavours are the hallmarks of the Cheddars selected from Montgomery’s, a firm favourite of The Gog’s. Drier and more stratified than most of the Cheddars sold, its almost crystalline nature makes it melt in the mouth.

Red Leicester

A more mature, meatier version of Red Leicester, Mature Sparkenhoe Red Leicester is an excellent choice for your Christmas cheese board. The ageing process creates richly savoury, brothy flavours and a texture that is crunchier and more crystalline than its younger counterpart.

Stilton

Neal’s Yard Dairy have worked with Colston Bassett Dairy for many years to perfect the recipe for the Colston Bassett Stilton, which is solely exclusive to them.

Gentler, sweeter and more balanced than a ‘typical’ blue cheese, it boasts a creamy, buttery paste pierced with the delicate blue veining characteristic of a Stilton.

How much cheese should I order?

It’s best to buy cheese in larger portions, especially at this time of year. This is because it keeps much better in large pieces as opposed to small pieces which can dry out quicker.

“We recommend roughly between 100-150g of cheese per person per sitting. With Christmas being a time of excess, we encourage you to order enough to last you through the festive period, allowing you to work your way through a larger chunk over several sittings.” - Neal’s Yard Dairy
