The Great Gog Magog Chili-Off
On Saturday the 18th April we held the inaugural Gog Magog Chili-Off. Four talented local chefs went head-to-head to win the title of Chili Champion 2015 and a Mini Big Green Egg! Our brave voters tried all four chilis, before picking their favourite, and in doing so – entering themselves into the prize draw to win another Mini Egg!
THE COMPETITORS
Chili Numero Uno: Steak & Honour – Leo Reithoff, worked as a chef at Hix Mayfair and Alimentum in Cambridge. Inspired by the Street Food revolution and a love of burgers, Steak & Honour was born and has now gained legendary status in the area. Steak & Honour were the winner of The British Street Food Awards for the East of England.
Chili Numero Dos: Guerilla Kitchen – Jay Scrimshaw has worked at Bibendum and Chez Bruce in London. He won Best British Restaurant in 2010 at The Pheasant pub, which was also a finalist on Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word. Jay’s street food passion is the steamed Bao Bun and he is currently busy spreading the addictive quality of these around Cambridgshire.
Chili Numero Tres: Nic Williams – Our resident “eggspert”, Nic works closely with Big Green Egg coming up with fantastic recipes and trialling new ways of cooking on the Eggs. A lover of meat, slow cooking and barbecues, his website is home to a wealth of Egg recipes and cooking tips.
Chili Numero Cuatro: Ben Capsicana – Ben has a passion for authentic Latin American Chilies and cuisine. He loves them so much, that he quit his job as a venture capitalist in order to launch his own brand of products! Capsicana Chili sauces and cooking sauces and are stocked here in the shop.
After a couple of hours of (very pleasant) eating, drinking and basking in the sunshine, the votes were in and it was awards time. Charles – complete with Sombrero and moustache – made the announcement. The winner was… Jay Scrimshaw of Guerilla Kitchen! There were shrieks of delight from their food van as a very happy Jay came to collect the cup.
Jay rummaged about in the ballot box to find the winner of other Green Egg. David Jacques was over the moon to hear his name called out and is looking forward to cooking his own Chili on his Mini Egg very soon.
